The Γ-convergence of a Sharp Interface Thin Film Model with Non-convex Elastic Energy

چکیده

We give results for the Γ-limit of a scaled elastic energy of a film as the thickness h > 0 converges to zero. The elastic energy density models materials with multiple phases or variants and is thus non-convex. The model includes an interfacial energy that allows sharp interfaces between the phases and variants and is proportional to the total variation of the deformation gradient.

A Finite Element Model for Martensitic Thin Films

A finite element approximation of the thin film limit for a sharp interface bulk energy for martensitic crystals is given. The energy density models the softening of the elastic modulus controlling the low-energy path from the cubic to the tetragonal lattice, the loss of stability of the tetragonal phase at high temperatures and the loss of stability of the cubic phase at low temperatures, and ...

Thin-film Limits of Functionals on A-free Vector Fields

This paper deals with variational principles on thin films with linear PDE constraints represented by a constant-rank operator A, and studies the effective behavior, in the sense of Γ-convergence, of integral functionals as the thickness of the domain tends to zero. The limit integral functional turns out to be determined by the A-quasiconvex envelope of the original energy density and is const...

Quasistatic evolution of a brittle thin film

This paper deals with the quasistatic crack growth of a homogeneous elastic brittle thin film. It is shown that the quasistatic evolution of a three-dimensional cylinder converges, as its thickness tends to zero, to a two-dimensional quasistatic evolution associated with the relaxed model. Firstly, a Γ-convergence analysis is performed with a surface energy density which does not provide weak c...

Invertibility and noninvertibility in thin elastic structures

The nonlinear elastic energy of a thin film of thickness h is given by a functional E. Friesecke, James and Müller derived the Γ-limits, as h → 0, of the functionals hE for α ≥ 3. In this article we study the invertibility properties of almost minimizers of these functionals, and more generally of sequences with equiintegrable energy density. We show that they are invertible almost everywhere a...

Variational Implicit Solvation with Solute Molecular Mechanics: From Diffuse-Interface to Sharp-Interface Models

Central in a variational implicit-solvent description of biomolecular solvation is an effective free-energy functional of the solute atomic positions and the solute-solvent interface (i.e., the dielectric boundary). The free-energy functional couples together the solute molecular mechanical interaction energy, the solute-solvent interfacial energy, the solute-solvent van der Waals interaction e...
